Happy Birthday, Nancy Drew

The Nancy Drew book series just reached its 80th anniversary. These books were of better quality than most critics acknowledge, and they have been far more influential—in a positive way—than feminists want to admit. Story here. Books here.

Are Nancy Drew books still being written?

Bob, there’s the Nancy Drew and the Clue Crew series for beginning readers, and there’s a series of graphic novels for older readers. There’s also a series of Nancy Drew video games that look as if they attempt to capture the appeal of the original books.

My sisters were crazy about the Nancy Drew books. I didn’t read them, but I did see the movies with the lovely Bonita Granville, which I liked. Now, of course, they are all classics. I did hear, several years, ago that there was an attempt to “update” Nancy, but never discovered if the publisher actually went through with it.

I enjoyed the Bonita Granville movies too, Bob. I took my daughter to the theater to see the recent film starring Emma Roberts, and we both quite enjoyed it. Like you, I haven’t read the books, but I think that Nancy Drew is quite a laudable character and has been served well by Hollywood, though too rarely. (I can’t comment on the 1980s TV series, however, as I haven’t seen it.)
