Thoughts for Independence Day (5)

From Thomas Jefferson:

The boisterous sea of liberty is never without a wave.

No government ought to be without censors; and where the press is free no one ever will.

My God! How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of, and which no other people on earth enjoy!

I tremble for my country when I reflect that God is just; that his justice cannot sleep forever.

I hold it, that a little rebellion, now and then, is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical.

The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is its natural manure.

When we get piled upon one another in large cities, as in Europe, we shall become corrupt as in Europe.

Paper is poverty … it is only the ghost of money, and not money itself.

The republican is the only form of government which is not eternally at open or secret war with the rights of mankind.
