‘Progressive’ Nonprofit Urges Politically Themed Movies

A public policy focused nonprofit is getting into the movie business. It wants Hollywood to produce more social and politically themed products selling the George Soros worldview. From the New York Times: The Harmony Institute wants to change your mind — at the movies. In the last few weeks, a little-noticed nonprofit with big ideas about the persuasive power of movies and television shows quietly began an initiative aimed at getting filmmakers and others to use the insights and techniques of behavioral psychology in delivering social and political messages through their work. John S. Johnson III, a descendant of Robert Wood Johnson – founder of Johnson & Johnson, doesn’t want more movies like An Inconvenient Truth, Bowling for Columbine, or Capitalism: A Love Story. He wants more movies like The Day After Tomorrow or The Day the Earth Stood Still remake: Mr. Johnson made a study of what his group calls “the science of influence,” with the help of friends like Kenneth Broad, a director of Columbia’s Center for Research on Environmental Decisions, and Eric Johnson, a professor of business and marketing at Columbia, both of whom are now on the institute’s advisory committee. Michael Douglas, the actor, who according

Weak Resolution Mars ‘Rizzoli and Isles’ Episode

Yesterday, you may recall, I pointed out two TNT crime dramas with overt political messages parroting Democrat Party/Obama administration talking points. So, naturally, TNT ran another such program last night. First, I will note that last night’s episode of The Closer was free of any political posturing. It’s good to see the program back on track after the previous week’s nonsense, and the episode was far more dramatically effective than its predecessor, as should be expected given the way didacticism tends to ruin fiction narratives. That happy event was followed by episode three of the new crime drama series Rizzoli and Isles, about a Boston homicide detective named Rizzoli (Angie Harmon, Law and Order, The Women’s Murder Club) and her friend, Isles (Sasha Alexander, NCIS). Each episode follows the two characters as they try to solve murder mysteries in Beantown. Last night’s episode dealt with the murder of a black teenage male. Intimations are made that he may have been murdered by a street gang with which he may or may not have been involved. Also under suspicion is a weird, local West African church which engages in rituals with voodoo overtones, the pastor of which is an ex-con who

What Constitutes True Science?—Frank Tipler Has an Answer

What Constitutes True Science?—Frank Tipler Has an Answer

“Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts.” — Richard Feynman Frank Tipler, in a new article on Pajamas Media, believes that true science has fallen into the hands of cargo cults: They have shown themselves to have no understanding of the meaning of the word “scholarship.” There are all too many such professors at the leading American universities. Which is why Feynman defined science to be a belief in the ignorance of such people. They are ignorant. Feynman used the expression “cargo-cult science” to describe the “science” done by such people. These “scientists” are so highly politicized that they aren’t really blinded by science—they’re blind to science: You have the right to hear the evidence, and you have the right to judge whether the evidence supports the conclusion. We now use the phrase “scientific consensus,” or “peer review,” rather than “science has shown.” By whatever name, the idea is balderdash. Feynman was absolutely correct. …. Many areas of “science” today have the superficial appearance of true science, but not the reality. Climate “science” is an example. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Resources: Tipler’s article is here. A previous American Culture article about Tipler and Freeman Dyson
