Larry, I think it's interesting that McCartney's newest album is primarily standards, and I guess he got a standing ovation at the Grammies. I've heard some of the album and I rather like it. I wasn't sure about Sir Paul and standards, but it actually makes a great fit. He doesn't force it and sings pretty low key. But it does remind us that, "they don't make 'em like they used to." As you imply, very little music of today will stand the test of time.

Mike, I was absolutely thrilled to see this post. Other than a brief period in the 90s (coinciding, not surprisingly, with my dorm-based college years), I have stuck with vinyl and have been heartened to see other music listeners returning to the format in droves. A cherished record, like a luxury car, requires love, care, and maintenance. It is a tangible document that represents all of the hard work that goes into crafting a piece of music. Viva la vinyl!

Very interesting idea, Robert. I won't be joining you in this particular self-sacrifice, but I think the idea of a regular sabbath or sabbatical from the web is very appealing. To me it doesn't make much difference whether I read words online or in print, or watch videos online or on satellite TV, but you bring up some important things to think about here, specifically about how one invests one's time. Perhaps staying off the Internet on Sundays would present significant benefits for those who feel ground down by information overload.

I heard excerpts of this speech and had similar thoughts. Then, after a few moments, I thought we should take him at his word and demand the immediate establishment of a 10% flat tax on everyone of every income level. Isn't that the Biblical "tax" rate? So if Obama wants to use the Judeo-Christian tradition to establish tax policy, fine. The Bible, I believe, sets 10% as what we should tithe. Then let it also be the maximum tax rate.

Something tells me that Pres. Obama, when confronted with this Christian fact, would suddenly find it not so convenient.

And the whole multiverse idea, of course, is sheer speculation, not science and not philosophy. Or so it seems to me.
