GOProudly into the Dark Night

GOProudly into the Dark Night

According to Roger Simon, the Libertarians are about to take over the Republican Party: Oh Happy Day!!! (He does admit that this is probably “wishful thinking”) He must have in mind the amazing success at the ballot box that Libertarians have had the last four decades. What? They haven’t had any success at the ballot box? Well, there has to be a reason for his unbridled joy and triumphalist tone. I guess it is that in embracing the homosexual Republican group GOProud, “it will open up a whole new constituency for the GOP.” And what would that constituency be? Why young people, the ones that watch Glee, and that by the way don’t vote a whole lot. But at least it will make Republicans look cool again. Enough of those fuddy duddy old religious conservatives. According to Simon issues like abortion and other so called social issues seem “anachronistic,” at least in the heady halls of the CPAC conference. This was all written in praise of Andrew Breitbart, who hosted a coming out (pun intended) party for GOProud at CPAC this week. Unfortunately for those behind the times social conservatives, some organizations decided to boycott the conference. Not a good

A Troubling Precedent: NJ Court Says Bloggers Are Not Journalists

A Troubling Precedent: NJ Court Says Bloggers Are Not Journalists

The Garden State has a shield law for journalists, meaning the government cannot force reporters or opinion writers to reveal their sources. There is nothing more vigorously defended among journalists than the right to keep secret one’s anonymous sources in service of “the public’s right to know.” The decades-long secret identity of “Deep Throat” in The Washington Post’s Watergate exposés is the standard of that journalistic principle. (And there is going to be reason to snicker at that example later. Be patient.) But a New Jersey state appellate court last weekruled that a woman named Shellee Hale is not a“real” journalist, but just a blogger, so is not protected by the state’s shield law. In the words of New Jersey Superior Court Appellate Judge Anthony J. Parrillo: “Simply put, new media should not be confused with news media.” This backward-looking, snobbish decision is troubling for many reasons. Before we get into the upcoming righteous outrage from someone who was a regular member of the “news media” for nearly 20 years — but is now a “new media” journalist — here’s some background on the case. Shellee Hale, who lives in Washington state, wrote in the comment section of a blog that New Jersey-based software company Too Much Media was the victim

NPR Reinforces Breitbart’s Reason for Being

NPR Reinforces Breitbart’s Reason for Being

On its surface NPR provides what appears as a fairly balanced report about Andrew Breitbart.  The story’s sucker punch however comes in the final paragraph, and I doubt the reporter even knew he was throwing it. I will acknowledge that the reporter is fair for most of the story. He has some good quotes from Breitbart and Instapundit blogger and U. of Tennessee law professor Glenn Reynolds. These are balanced with comments from New York Times public editor Clark Hoyt. In the end, however, the reporter’s bias slips through when he ties what Breitbart does to James O’Keefe with: A New Kind Of Journalism says, and O’Keefe says, they are performing a new kind of journalism. … reporters at other outlets have repeatedly questioned O’Keefe’s tactics: the deception; the editing choices in the ACORN videos. This comes after spending several paragraphs describing the activity for which O’Keefe was arrested. The point isn’t subtle at all. Breitbart and O’Keefe “are perfoming a new kind of journalism.”  O’Keefe’s “new kind of jourlanism” requires “tactics” questioned by “reporters at other outlets” and includes breaking the law. Therefore, Breitbart is paired with unscrupulous tactics that including breaking the law in order to
