The Dance of the Straw Men

The Dance of the Straw Men

If you're a social conservative, chances are you’ve had a conversation something like this:

Conservative: “But if we accept homosexual behavior as normal, how do we retain other traditional taboos, like the one against incest?”

Liberal: “That’s just a straw man. Nobody’s going to advocate incest.”

Now, read this, from Tauriq Moosa, tutor in ethics, bioethics and critical thinking at the University of Cape Town, South Africa (courtesy of my friend Dale Nelson):

Thirdly, and oddly, people exclaim “just” repugnant. We will examine this more closer later. Nonetheless, why should the sexual activities of two consenting adults concern us? This is the same question we can ask those who are ‘against’ homosexuality (which is like being against having blue eyes). It is none of our business what two consenting adults wish to do (as long as no one else is harmed/involved without consent). . . .

We cannot leave it up to the whims of our emotions to implement policies and laws which could, unnecessarily, cause suffering to other people, as is the case with gay people, women, and indeed the current brother-and-sister couple.

Pretty lively for a straw man, isn’t it?

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Study Says Only 1.4% of Population Homosexual

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Study Says Only 1.4% of Population Homosexual

A scientific study commissioned by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has found that only 1.4 percent of people are homosexual. I suppose that that must surprise you. The first thing I thought of when I read  Michael Medved’s article about the study was how different the facts are from what the contemporary culture tells us. When watching television, after all, it seems as if 50 percent of the population is homosexual. It’s evident that a tiny minority of Americans have enormous power in Hollywood, the entertainment capital of the world. Similarly, our cultural elites in media and education unanimously profess to believe that sexual orientation is not a choice but as innate as skin color; that has indeed become the dominant cultural message about this issue. In light of such an onslaught, is it any wonder that so many young people are reported as struggling with their sexuality? I have an example. My daughter grew up with a friend, a boy, who danced with her for the nine years she was involved in a local park district dance company. They even had a bit of a romantic involvement early in

Why We Are Doomed

Why We Are Doomed

By Lars Walker I’ve been waiting to see a response from other social conservatives to the recent Gallup Poll which reports that Americans now favor “gay” marriage by a percentage of 53% to 45%. This year’s nine-percentage-point increase in support for same-sex marriage is the largest year-to-year shift yet measured over this time period. Two-thirds of Americans were opposed to legalized same-sex marriage in 1996, with 27% in favor. By 2004, support had risen to 42% and, despite some fluctuations from year to year, stayed at roughly that level through last year. I haven’t seen much yet along those lines, so I’ll say something myself. I don’t expect to convince anyone of anything (I rarely do), and it goes without saying I’ll be compared to a Nazi, but I’ll do it anyway, because it’s been on my mind. First of all, I’m not entirely convinced by the figures. My experience is that people with liberal views are generally oversampled in such polls. But that doesn’t alter the fact that, beyond question, acceptance of homosexuality has been growing rapidly among Americans. Among young people, it’s barely an issue anymore. Barring some major critical event, like a movement of the Holy Spirit

Elton John Reveals the True “Gay” Agenda

Elton John Reveals the True “Gay” Agenda

At a concert recently to raise money to overturn Proposition 8 in California, Elton John let it be known how he feels about those who believe marriage (i.e., everyone for all of recorded history until now) is exclusively between one man and one woman (even polygamists believe marriage is about children): “As a gay man, I think I have it all,” he said. “I have a wonderful career. A wonderful life. I have my health. I have a partner of 17 years and I have a son. And you know what, I don’t have everything, because I don’t have the respect of people like the church, and people like politicians who tell me that I’m not worthy or that I am ‘less than’ because I am gay. Well, fuck you….” The hundreds in the crowd stood and cheered wildly, before he went on: “We deserve the respect, equality, the right to be recognized as a human being. Until we are, then we have to do these kind of events. We have to fight the good fight and we will win this fight.” Why don’t you really tell us how you feel, Elton. The tortured logic here is something to behold.

“Innocence by Association” — Public Schools, Propaganda, and the Gay Push for Respectability

“Innocence by Association” — Public Schools, Propaganda, and the Gay Push for Respectability

by Mike Gray School administrators often claim that expressions of disapproval of homosexuality make students feel “unsafe.” But what administrators mean when they say “safety” is actually “comfort.” Conventionally, safety refers to the absence of verbal or physical harassment or abuse. Now, however, “safety” has acquired an expansive redefinition. It has now come to mean absence of uncomfortable feelings. — Laurie Higgins At RenewAmerica, Matt C. Abbott notes the propaganda campaign aimed at normalizing “the homosexualist agenda”: Even more disturbing than the homosexual lobby’s infiltration into the conservative movement is their infiltration into the public school system. Below is a significant portion of the text of an excellent talk given by Laurie Higgins, director of the Division of School Advocacy for the Illinois Family Institute, at the recent Americans for Truth conference. Higgins’ talk illustrates just how badly the homosexualist agenda has infected (ahem) the public school system. Higgins indicates how the gay agenda is being promoted not only at the national level but also at the grassroots; the specific targets of their propaganda are school children who lack wisdom and discernment; and judges who also lack wisdom and discernment like it that way: The nation’s first homosexuality-affirming middle school

Update on Outrage

TAC

He appeared before the congregation again this past Sunday. He and members of the elders explained that he has been exonerated by their investigation. Among other things they spoke, with his permission, with people in the Courage group in whom he had confided. They can find no evidence that he has been living a secret sex life. They are satisfied that Pastor Brock is celibate, which is all we ask of any man dealing with this difficult problem.

Professor Fired for Teaching Catholic Belief in a Catholic Class

Professor Fired for Teaching Catholic Belief in a Catholic Class

By Daniel Crandall Here’s yet another case of reality intruding where only the satirical newspaper, The Onion, once trod. An adjunct professor at the University of Illinois was fired for explaining Catholic beliefs concerning Natural Law to students enrolled in a class about Catholicism. Howell, who taught Introduction to Catholicism and Modern Catholic Thought, says he was fired at the end of the spring semester after sending an e-mail explaining some Catholic beliefs to his students preparing for an exam. What bit of pedagogy was so verboten that the University of Illinois could no longer abide Prof. Howell’s presence on campus? That would be nothing less than the Church’s teaching concerning homosexual behavior: “Natural Moral Law says that Morality must be a response to REALITY…. In other words, sexual acts are only appropriate for people who are complementary, not the same.” This bit of Catholic doctrine so offended one student that it resulted in an anonymous message being sent to religion department head Robert McKim complaining of, you guessed it, “hate speech.” The complaining student, however, isn’t even in Prof. Howell’s class: An unidentified . . . student claimed to be a friend of the offended student. The

“House” and the Ontological Certitude of Sexual Orientation

“House” and the Ontological Certitude of Sexual Orientation

This week’s episode of “House” dealt extensively with the topic of homosexuality, and in a thoroughly modern way. The consensus among American cultural elites is that one’s “sexual orientation” (a loaded relativistic modern term) is determined at conception. Like skin color it is immutable, and thus any attempt to “change” it is as unnatural as Michael Jackson’s skin was. And if anyone expresses any moral qualms about homosexuality, they are considered akin to a racist and a bigot. Fortunately, “House” often deals with contentious issues in a fairly nuanced way, and you could tell in this case the writers were trying hard to not be absolutists about the issue. In fact the title of the episode is called “The Choice.” But it was also clear that without any true North, any real moral compass, dealing with the issue of homosexuality is a confusing mess. All you are left with is assertions. I say, you say; whatever. The story starts at the altar where the bride and groom are taking their vows. As the groom is ready to say “I do” he passes out. Once it is found out that he has had a same-sex relationship in his past, it is

‘I Am Proud to Be a Heterosexual Man’

‘I Am Proud to Be a Heterosexual Man’

I am proud to be a heterosexual man. This is something worth celebrating. Allowing myself to be seduced by fear and insecurity became a self-fulfilling prophecy of sabotage. Today I take full responsibility for my decisions and my actions. To keep this a secret from my public, as I did up until today, would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids were born with. These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn’t even know existed. Just thought you’d like to know. This sort of thing is news, evidently.
