Rango’s Spiritual Journey

Rango’s Spiritual Journey

By Mike Gray I haven’t seen Rango, the Johnny Depp animated feature, but Daniel Krawisz has, and he thinks there’s more depth to the film than the usual Hollywood fare: I saw Rango to enjoy the combined hijinks of Johnny Depp and other cartoon animals, and in this I was not disappointed; however, it was not at all the most memorable aspect of the experience. Rango led me to entirely unexpected places. It is not simply a cartoon about a lizard but a journey into the soul, and it depicts the trials of individuation haunted by the constant specter of death. Interleaved with this basic theme are strong libertarian overtones of the relationship of the individual to society and establishing a connection between redemption and the search for wealth. Rango is intensely metaphorical. It is full of allusions to other films and stories. From the start, the stream of allusions takes one into an associative state of mind, a state receptive to symbols. Rango takes place in an Old West–themed world with animal characters, but to me these all feel like a facade — the movie is a dream, and real action takes place in the mind of the unseen

‘Dragon’ Crushes ‘Time Machine’, Shortage of 3D Theaters Notable

Fantasy still dominates the U.S. movie box office. Leading in ticket revenue during its opening weekend, the Dreamworks animated adventure-comedy How to Train Your Dragon handily beat the raunchy comedy Hot Tub Time Machine, which was also in its opening weekend. Dragon brought in a healthy though not monumental or unexpected $43.3 million, while Time Machine came in below expectations, finishing third with only $13.7 million. The number 1 film of the previous three weeks, Alice in Wonderland, dropped to second place with a $17.3 million box office take. But don’t feel too sorry for the filmmakers—it has already swagged $656 million worldwide in just three weeks. A big reason for the drop in Alice attendance was . . . the debut of How to Train Your Dragon. U.S. movie theaters have a total of approximately 4,000 3D screens available nationwide, which means that when a warmly anticipated new 3D film appears, the reigning king of 3D gets bumped from many theaters, reducing revenues. James Cameron’s Avatar dropped out of the top 10 altogether, thanks at least in part to the shortage of 3D venues. Despite the shortage of screens, 3D movies have led the U.S. box office for nine

The Frantically Boring Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

The Frantically Boring Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus

In another post I stated that I looked forward to The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus based, in part, on an impressive movie poster. After seeing the movie, it is clear one cannot judge a book, or movie in this case, by its cover. The films of Terry Gilliam are an acquired taste and even then the aficionados are few (like rare and smelly cheese). While Time Bandits, Brazil, and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen might have an earnest if not broad following, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus fails to stir even these loyalists. That’s no surprise. Imaginarium is dull and tedious, struggling to get past even its first act. It’s a mess, full of unsympathetic characters pursuing selfish ends who never develop in an meaningful way. My friends Liberty Belle and her fiancé, with whom I saw the film put it well, “It’s an intriguingly boring film.” And in a perverse way it is. Watching it you wonder if the stultifying dullness of the last scene will be topped by the next. Imaginarium focuses on a man, Doctor Parnassus (Christopher Plummer), an immortal ex-monk and now traveling showman who made a deal with the Devil to restore his youth so
